Obasanjo challenges Adeleke to dance in Osogbo

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Sunday, challenged Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, to dance at the Government House in Osogbo, the state capital. Speaking…

Speaking during the commissioning of Government House VIP Lodge in Osogbo, the former President said Adeleke’s dancing attribute is one of the reasons he likes him and that he would keep dancing with Adeleke anywhere he meets him.

The former President however appealed to the governor to ensure that he work hard and deliver on his campaign promises to the people of the state to justify their trust in him.

“Don’t stop dancing. But, please, also keep working. Work very hard to develop Osun State. Your state is one of the most secure in the country. Make sure you work very hard to make Osun great”, Obasanjo said.

He urged the governor not to mind castigating him for dancing but should combine his dancing skills with provision of infrastructure like he is doing presently.

“Some people once despise you that you are a dancer but I said only happy people dance, you are my dancing partner.

“What I have heard and saw since three days ago that I have been here, If anyone is still doubtinv the fact that you are working, bring the person to come and see Osun himself.

“Make sure you prioritize your developmental projects in line with the peoples’ desire, such priorities would attract investment thereby enhancing growth and development of the state.

“Our people have desire to work and invest, they need an enabling environment once you do that, there would job opportunities for the teeming youth population in the state”, he said.

The former President noted that Nigeria is a complex country but not a difficult to rule.

He said the leader only needs to be honest and be a man of good character.

Obasanjo, who reiterated that he is no longer a member of People Democratic Party (PDP), pleaded with leaders and members of the party to unite, work together and speak with with one voice.

While speaking, Governor Adeleke expressed gratitude to Obasanjo for his leadership role, service to the country and support for his administration.

Lagos monarch, others for arraignment over alleged N29m fraud

The Federal High Court in Lagos, on Tuesday, fixed June 26, 2024, for the arraignment of a Lagos monarch, Monsuru Abimbola Oladega, and six others over alleged N29.3m fraud.

Other defendants in the charge marked FHC/L/80c/2024 are Abdulfatai Akinwale Bankole, Abubakar Seriki, Razak Alayaki Seriki, Mrs Jemilatu Busari, Amoda Ibrahim and Adams Adebiyi.

The defendants will be arraigned on four counts bordering on conspiracy, obtaining, fraud, and retaining preferred against them by the Police Special Fraud Unit.

The monarch and other defendants’ arraignment was initially scheduled for Tuesday, but when the matter was called, the defendants’ counsel, Abayomi Fagbayi, told the court that it’s only the first defendant (Abdulfatai Akinwale Bankole) who had been served with the charge.

Fagbayi told Justice Akintayo Aluko that he was informed by the first defendant that the second defendant (Monsuru Abimbola Oladega) travelled abroad for a medical check-up and that the rest were not residing within the community.

The defendants’ counsel then asked the court for an adjournment to enable them to take their plea on the next date.

He said, “Even though they told me that they would come together and discuss the charge, I’ll bring them to court on the next adjourned date.”

Prosecution counsel, Elliot Ejie, who announced his appearance for the complainant, the Inspector-General of Police, did not oppose the adjournment request of the defence counsel.

Consequently, Justice Aluko adjourned the matter to June 26, for the arraignment of all the defendants.

The police in the charge alleged that the defendants had between 2014 and 2022 conspired among themselves and fraudulently obtained the sum of N29.3m.

The police said they also obtained vehicles such as 1998 model Infinity QS4 Jeep, one 1998 model Nissan Pathfinder Jeep, and one Toyota Camry car, properties of one Joseph  Fagbamila, Olaniyi Owoyomi, and the Amicable Friends Estate, under the pretence of allocating 15 acres and four plots of Odoyi’s family land, situate at Oko-Agbon, Agboyi 1, Lagos State to them.

Before Tuesday’s proceedings and due to the inability of the police to reach the defendants for the service of the charge, Justice Aluko had on March 18, 2024, ordered that the charge be served on their lawyer, Abayomi Fagbayi.

ATIKU’S LEADERSHIP IN PDP’s SEASON OF ANOMIE

By Tunde Olusunle

Sceptical reporters had indeed cast the headlines of the stories they were going to file, ahead of the 98th National Executive Committee, (NEC) meeting of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, (PDP), Thursday April 18, 2023. They were awaiting the news of the implosion of the party after what was going to be a testy, nervy convergence of the party leadership at that level. The NEC ranks next to its National Convention. The recent PDP, NEC engagement was the first since the rancorous 2023 general elections.

Very bitter acrimony hallmarked the elections with partial breakaways by stakeholders at various levels. Most notable of these was the rebellion of the *G-5* an amalgam of Nyesom Wike, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Okezie Ikpeazu, Samuel Ortom, former governors of Rivers, Enugu, Abia and Benue. Seyi Makinde who is serving his second term as governor of Oyo State who was the last of the quintet. The last four stood in solidarity with Wike who lost out in his bid to pair with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar on the PDP presidential ticket. The former Rivers governor came second at the presidential primary of the party held in May 2022, and automatically fancied himself as running mate for all his troubles. Wike has serially confirmed that he worked for the presidential flagbearer of the All Progressives Congress, (APC), Bola Tinubu and has been rewarded with a ministerial appointment to a plum ministry.

Ortom admitted he worked for the emergence of Peter Obi who flew the flag of the Labour Party, (LP), for the nation’s number one job. Like Ugwuanyi and Ikpeazu, Ortom sadly lost his bid for the senate. By some uncanny coincidence, all three were trounced by candidates from other political parties. This has generated discussions about their political rootedness in their various political spaces against the rather-too-early conversations about 2027.Conjectures and permutations preceding the meeting of the leading oppositional NEC, envisaged a collision between pro-Atiku and pro-Wike tendencies at the event. It was presumed that the core of discourse at the programme would be the question of the replacement of the chairman of the party, Umar Iliya Damagum. Following the suspension of Iyorchia Ayu a former university teacher and Emeritus minister from the position early last year, Damagum, the senior deputy national chairman took over in an acting capacity.

Owing to the poor funding of the party which has always derived its oxygen courtesy of the benevolence of its governors, parliamentarians and stakeholders, it has been advanced that Wike has been supportive of Damagum. Despite being minister in an opposition government, Wike has not relinquished his membership of the PDP and has not been disciplined. He has said on several occasions that he hoped to remain in the party, but compromise its unity and stability.

The agenda for the meeting, however, precluded this particular issue. The sitting discussed the: Timetable for party congresses and reconstitution of the disciplinary and reconciliation committees. It also situated a committee to amend the constitution of the PDP; sustainable funding of the party and the need to rebrand the 25 year-old logo of the party, the very famous “umbrella.” Attendance at the meeting was large and broad-based. No fewer than 350 leaders of the PDP from the 36 states and the federal capital turned up. The crammed up conference hall of the party rekindled the question about why the PDP is yet to complete its purpose-built multistorey national headquarters at the very heart of Abuja which has been abandoned for about a decade.

Atiku led the way with former Vice President Namadi Sambo in tow. There were also the former President of the Senate who is also the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, (BOT), Adolphus Wabara and some of his successors, notably David Mark and Bukola Saraki. Former Deputy Speakers of the House of Representatives Austin Opara, Chibudom Nwuche and Emeka Ihedioha were on the front row. The PDP has never been in short supply of formidable and reputable Nigerians with former party chairmen; former governors and serving governors; federal parliamentarians; members of the National Working Committee, (NWC) and elder statesmen in the BOT among those in attendance. You could feel the “long-time-no-see” bonhomie, even as you could almost slice the foreboding in the air of the constrained conference hall of the party in its secretariat.Since Ayu is from the north central, a section of the party is inclined towards what has been described as a “like for like” replacement.

This will see a PDP stalwart from the same zone replace him, which is the perspective of the Atiku school of thought. Gabriel Torwua Suswam, former governor of Benue State and three-time federal parliamentarian fits the bill. He has seen it all in the past 25 years of fourth republic democracy and cannot be bullied by anyone. On the flip side, pro-Wike elements reportedly prefer that Damagum should indeed be formally consecrated at the NEC meeting as substantive chairman of the PDP. Strategists in the party, however, reckoned that perpetuating Damagum who received a vote of confidence from the National Working Committee, (NWC) and the National Caucus of the party just days before, could be politically suicidal.

His current relationship with Wike could be counterproductive to the global interest of party. Atiku’s reputation as an authentic nationalist with friendships and relationships built and nurtured over aeons, remain very formidable. He is a foundation member of the PDP who led the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua’s “Peoples’ Front,” (PF), as a core component of the PDP when the party was in gestation in 1998. His national recognition and experience are critical to the party’s consolidation and preparations for future electoral involvements. He is therefore the proverbial elder who, from his local couch, can see that which a young tree climber cannot see. He gave his famous “don’t worry” smile when I engaged him a few days before about his expectations at the meeting.

That ability to make light of challenges must be one of the reasons for his bouncy health even at his age. Those who anticipated an inevitably loud combustion from the meeting were disappointed. Atiku and his loyalists drawn primarily from the ranks of longstanding members of the party have always desired strategic changes within the ranks of the PDP’s leadership structures, as a way of strengthening the party in the run-up towards 2027. He was, however, tactically amenable to the deferment of the potentially explosive subject of leadership change which was pushed to the back-burner.

The need for sustained reconciliation and the enthronement of party discipline was therefore foregrounded. Two committees were activated namely the reconciliation committee to be led by Saraki, and that of discipline which would be chaired by Udom Emmanuel, the suave immediate past governor of Akwa Ibom State. Atiku thus supported the continuation of the Damagum-led NWC for the following few months during which the north central zone will build consensus around a specific candidate from the zone for the position of national chairman. This followed the proposition that a follow-up NEC meeting be called in August 2024. Overtime, Wike is said to have foisted leaders on the PDP and fallen out with them as soon as he considered them not in alignment with his designs. In the recent history of the party, Wike it was who proposed Ali Modu Sheriff, Ahmed Makarfi and Uche Secondus who, instructively is his kinsman from Rivers State, as chairmen of the PDP.

He reportedly also supported the ascension of Iyorchia Ayu on the recommendation of Samuel Ortom, preparatory to launching his presidential bid in 2022. The Atiku camp came prepared to take Wike on if the issue of the replacement of the national chairman came up for discussion. Atiku diplomatically talked them out of the issue. Atiku differed pointedly from those who reacted in the aftermath of the meeting that the party had lost its gravitas. His words: “PDP is not finished. The party has demonstrated maturity and leadership. The acting National Chairman has been holding forth for almost one year.

It was the consensus that he would be replaced by a nominee from the north central. That zone has been put on notice and given three months to put their house in order and bring a candidate.” Foreign affairs minister in the Obasanjo/Atiku administration, Dubem Onyia in alliance with Atiku, also admonished dissenters to listen to the former Vice President, a father figure in the party. He seemed to rehash the popular African parable which educates that when a tree is being hewn from its bottom, the old man is concerned about how and where it will land, not the rhythm of the axe or the sound of its fall.

Segun Sowunmi a former Atiku spokesman warned members of the party against de-marketing the party. He enjoined party stalwarts to push out the narrative that the PDP being a much more democratic and organised party than is imagined. This he says is important so the party does not, inadvertently play into the hands of haters and traducers. Quoting a biblical verse from Ecclesiastes Chapter 9, Verse 11 to buttress his point, Sowunmi reminded PDP supporters thus: “The race is not for the swift nor victory for the strong. But it is the Lord that shows mercy.” Dagogo Farah a former parliamentarian from Rivers State saluted Atiku’s “maturity and sagacity” in preventing the PDP ship from losing course at the NEC meeting.

Without a doubt, the PDP is capable of a rebound so long it avoids the pitfalls of the past. *Tunde Olusunle, PhD, is a Fellow of the Association of Nigerian Authors, (FANA)*

Police invite Edo Labour Party, guber candidate, Akpata over attack at UNIBEN

The candidate of the Labour Party, LP, in the forthcoming September 21, 2024 governorship election in Edo State, Olumide Akpata has been invited by the State Police Command over alleged security breaches, involving shootings at the University of Benin, UNIBEN, last Friday.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, Chidi Nwabuzor, disclosed this to newsmen in Benin City,

Nwabuzor said the invitation was served on the LP gubernatorial candidate by investigators in the Political Desk Session of the State Criminal Investigation Department, CID, on Tuesday, April 16, 2024.

The Labour Party gubernatorial candidate, however, alleged that the attack was orchestrated by the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in the state as well as the State Government to assassinate him.

The command’s image maker further explained that the invitation of Olumide Akpata was part of the investigation initiated into the crisis by the police Command.

When contacted, the State Chairman of the Labour Party, Kelly Ogbaloi, who confirmed the receipt of the police invitation, said he was not in Benin when the letter was delivered but assured that he would honour the invitation.

According to him, Olumide Akpata is our candidate but UNIBEN invited him to honour him on a personal note. I didn’t sign a surety of his safety there. I don’t know why the police are equally inviting me to come along with Olumide Akpata.

“The police ought to have done their background investigations, his being honoured by UNIBEN had nothing to do with our party secretariat. So, I don’t know why I am being asked to come along with him to the Police Command Headquarters in Benin, however, I will honour the invitation”, he said.

Meanwhile, the Edo State Government and the authorities of the University of Benin had in separate statements condemned the attack on the Labour Party Governorship candidate.

A statement by the Edo State Commissioner for Communication and Orientation, Chris Osa Nehikhare while condemning the clash, said an investigation is ongoing on the issue.

Nehikhare, also warned that the state government would not tolerate violence or this sort of irresponsible behaviour which was associated with the visit of Mr. Akpata to the institution.

“The Edo State Government condemns in the strongest terms the violence associated with the Labour Party candidate, Mr Olumide Akpata’s visit to the University of Benin on Friday, April 12, 2024.

“Claims and counterclaims have been made by Mr Akpata and the Student Union Government (SUG) of the University in statements issued by both parties on April 13, and an active investigation is ongoing on the issue.

“The Edo State Government, however, warns in the strongest terms that it will not tolerate violence or this sort of irresponsible behaviour which was associated with the visit of Mr Akpata to the institution.

“Government has the primary responsibility to ensure the security of lives and property in the State and will spare no effort to ensure that anyone who breaches the peace, no matter how highly placed, will face the full weight of the law.

“We hereby call on all Edo people to go about their lawful businesses without and allow relevant agencies progress with their investigation into the said matter”, he stated.

On its part, the management of the university described the incident as unacceptable.

A statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the University, Dr Benedicta Ehanire, said the management has set up a Committee to investigate.

Ehanire said the committee, headed by Professor Frederick Ekhaise, has one week to submit a report to management.

“The Management of the University of Benin has condemned in strong terms reported violence during the visit of the Edo State Labour Party‘s gubernatorial candidate, Mr Olumide Akpata, on invitation by the Senior Staff Club of the Institution.

“The violent incident, allegedly perpetrated by some students, is unacceptable. Consequently, Management has set up a Committee to investigate the immediate and remote causes of the violent action”, she added.

Oyo State Govt Demolishes Yoruba Nation Building After Attack

The Oyo State government has demolished the building where the Yoruba Nation agitators are operating from in Ibadan, the state capital.

The building, located on Toye Oyesola Street in the Ibadan South West Local Government Area, was demolished on Wednesday, 17th April.

The demolition follows an attack on Saturday by the Modupe Onitiri-Abiola-led Yoruba Nation agitators on the Oyo State secretariat in Agodi, Ibadan, which was, however, thwarted by a joint team of security operatives, including soldiers and police operatives.

According to Punch, the demolition exercise was confirmed by the Special Adviser to the Oyo State Governor on Security Matters, CP Fatai Owoseni (retd.), but he directed further inquiries on the matter to the State Commissioner of Police.

“You can get more details from the Commissioner of Police,” he simply said.

N15tr Lagos-Calabar Coastal highway absolute necessity, says Ashimolowo

The Senior Pastor of Kingsway International Christian Centre (KICC) London Pastor Matthew Ashimolowo has backed the N15tr 700 -kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway project of the Federal Government, describing it as a “necessity.”

Ashimolowo, who hinged his support for the road project on its strategic economic importance and location, said about 60 percent of the businesses in Nigeria take place in Lagos alone while the Southwest, South – South and South -East regions, which he reckoned as “Nigeria’s basin of wealth,” lamented that roads in these regions remained largely impassable.

He noted that the coastal highway when completed will decongest traffic on Lagos – Ibadan, Lagos – Ore expressways respectively, fast-track movement of goods and persons and bring about accelerated growth and development in the South and rest of the country.

The renowned international preacher spoke with newsmen in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital after delivering his sermon on Monday titled ” The mark of a good man,” being his homily at the 60th birthday celebration  of the Founder and Lead Pastor of Victory Life Bible Church International, Apostle Lawrence  Achudume.

Ashimolowo advised the Federal Government not to neglect the need to also fix the existing deplorable federal roads in parts of the country while working on the ongoing Lagos – Calabar coastal highway.

He also urged the government to cut down cost of governance, devise other belt – tightening strategies to make funds available to help the poor and consider the  Kenneysian economic model which entails government making companies to produce in excess while the government buys the surplus for distribution to the poor.

According to him: “Personally, I will actually favour that coastal road because 60 percent of businesses done in Nigeria are done in Lagos alone and the Southwest, South – South and South – East are the basin of Nigeria’s wealth yet the roads are impassable.

“I think it is anachronism that the previous government did road to Niger to bring little or nothing. I think the coastal road is a necessity as long as there is balance while they’re doing that(the Lagos – Calabar coastal highway), they are repairing the other ones also.

“People who seemed to be blessed should not leave everything to the government. You cannot close your bowel of mercy (to the have nots), there  is need in the land, there is a lot challenges in the land. Nigeria is a funny place even if the prices of petrol and dollar come down, prices that have gone up may stay up. Reach out, touch somebody, bring out something even if you have to give them little here, little there.

“And to our leaders, please do all you can to bring down the cost of governance. Cut down the previous system of doing things. Look for ways to create some tightening of belts to help the needy, practice Kanesian economy, it is where government makes companies to over produce and the government buys the excess to give to the poor.”

On the birthday celebrator, Ashimolowo described Achudume as a learner and teacher who bears the mark of a good man with God’s presence resting on him, as evidenced in his intimacy with God.

According to him, the grace of God radiates  around Achudume.

Achudume described himself as a man helped by God and corroborated Ashimolowo’s position that he (Apostle Achudume) is someone who enjoys a special grace that keeps radiating around him.

“I am a man helped by God. I know where I’m coming from. I know where I would have been and I know where God has taken me.

“What would I say, but that God has helped me, that is the summary of my life.

“One thing I can remember  is that the ifa oracle had told my great grand mother that the man( Lawrence Achudume) will not serve the  God that they serve but will serve the white man’s God ( Christianity) and it began to work out. There are challenges on the way until we get to where we are.,” he stressed.

He praised his wife, children and congregants for being  strong  pillars of support.

He said: ” If my wife and  church members had given me problem, I would have died by age 40. God has blessed  me with wonderful people and I owe them a debt of love after the birthday celebration.”

The birthday celebration also witnessed the launch of an autobiography by Apostle Achudume titled ”  The  man helped by God.”

I collected $3m cash for Emefiele – Dispatch rider tells court

A dispatch rider, Monday Osazuwa, dazzled the Special Offences Court in Lagos with revelation on Friday when he narrated how the embattled former Central Bank of Nigeria Governor, Godwin Emefiele, instructed him on different instances to collect the sum of $3 million cash in tranches.

Osazuwa, who was led in evidence in chief by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission’s counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), told the Court that he had been a dispatch rider at Zenith Bank since 2001 before joining the CBN as a contract staff member in 2014.

The witness, who testified before Justice Raman Oshodi, said he was later appointed as a senior supervisor (full-time) in charge of recording and filing documents while working in the CBN Governor’s office in Lagos.

He stated that when he collected money for his boss (Emefiele), he would take it to his residence at Iru Close, Ikoyi, Lagos.

“The highest amount I collected was $1m, all in cash. Some weeks later, the businessman also called me, and I collected $850,000, $750,000, and $400,000 in cash in different tranches.

“I have never been rewarded, paid, or given anything. I was doing it out of faithfulness, and he knows it, but he never once said, ‘Take this,” the witness said.

Recall that the EFCC arraigned Emefiele on Monday, April 8, on 23 counts bordering on abuse of office.

He is being tried for alleged abuse of office and fraud to the tune of $4.5 billion and N2.8 billion.
