Appeal court upholds $5m verdict against Trump in sex abuse case

A federal appeals court on Monday upheld a jury verdict ordering President-elect Donald Trump to pay $5 million for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll.A New York jury found after a nine-day civil trial last year that the former president had sexually abused Carroll at a Manhattan department store in 1996.Trump was ordered to pay $2 million for sexual abuse and another $3 million for defaming Carroll, a former advice columnist for Elle magazine.

Trump denied the allegations and appealed the verdict on the grounds that two other women who said Trump had sexually assaulted them too should not have been allowed to testify. The three-judge panel of the Second US Circuit Court of Appeals disagreed.“We conclude that Mr. Trump has not demonstrated that the district court erred in any of the challenged rulings,” they said.“Further, he has not carried his burden to show that any claimed error or combination of claimed errors affected his substantial rights as required to warrant a new trial.”Carroll was awarded $83 million by another jury in a separate case she brought against Trump. He has appealed that verdict and Steven Cheung, a Trump spokesman, said the Republican would lodge a further appeal against the $5 million damages awarded in the sexual abuse and defamation case.“The American People have re-elected President Trump with an overwhelming mandate,” Cheung said in a statement.

“They demand an immediate end to the political weaponization of our justice system and a swift dismissal of all of the Witch Hunts, including the Democrat-funded Carroll Hoax, which will continue to be appealed,” he said.Related NewsABC News to pay Trump $15m in defamation caseAppeal Court vacates order stopping allocations to Rivers StateTikTok closer to US ban after losing court appealTwo federal cases brought against Trump by special counsel Jack Smith have been dismissed since he won the November 5 presidential election.Trump was accused of mishandling classified documents after leaving the White House and seeking to overturn the results of the 2020 election but Smith dropped the cases under a Justice Department policy of not prosecuting a sitting president.Trump was convicted in New York in May of 34 counts of falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.Judge Juan Merchan recently rejected a bid by the president-elect to have his conviction thrown out but has postponed sentencing indefinitely.

Crazy transport fares: Lagosians recount ordeals

For Lagos residents, navigating the bustling metropolis has become an increasingly costly and harrowing experience.

As transportation costs continue to soar, commuters are left grappling with life-altering challenges, reshaping their daily routines and livelihood. The once-affordable fares for daily commuting have spiralled out of control.

Lekki to Ajah: Once N400, now N1000; Ajah to CMS: Previously N700, now N2000-N2500; CMS to Costain: Previously N100, now N300; Costain to Ikeja: Once N400–N500, now N1000;

Oshodi to Ojota: Previously N300–N400, now N700–N800; Oshodi to Mile 2:Crazy transport fares: Lagosians recount ordeals

Vanguard gathered a few snapshot of the current transport fare

Once N300–N400, now N500–N700; Abule Egba to Oshodi: Previously N400–N500, now N700 (up to N1000 during peak periods); Amukoko to Mile 2: Previously N700 now N1500; and Mile 2 to Badagry: Previously N1500, now N2500.

Speaking to a few residents, Adaku, a young professional who lives in Gbogije, in the Lekki-Epe area of Lagos, shared her struggles.

She said: “After landing a promising job on Victoria Island, I found myself spending N6,000 daily on transportation. The financial burden proved unsustainable, forcing me to quit.

“I wanted to make a living but instead, I found myself spending everything I earned on transportation.”

Her story mirrors the plight of many Lagosians, whose aspirations were being crushed by the soaring cost of commuting.

BRT: A fading lifeline

While the Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, system, which was once a beacon of hope for affordable transport, its challenges were now causing more pain than relief.

Commuters like Kemi, who resides in Ajah and works in CMS, expressed frustration at the system’s unreliability.

She explained: “Waiting for BRT means being late to work because of the long queues. In the evenings, it’s even worse, there are hardly any bus available. By then, regular buses charge between N2,000 and N2,500 to Ajah.

“For those going beyond, fares soar between N3,000 and N3,500. We are passing through hell.”

In fact, a distraught parent recounted spending N10,000 for his child to commute from Gbogije to the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Akoka, to collect a certificate, adding: “People are just suffering because of this madness.”

For commuters like Mr. Kingsley, evenings in Mile 2 have become synonymous with frustration. “We are suffering in this country. In fact, we are too docile. Can you believe that Mile 2 to the First Gate is N400? We are in trouble,” he said.

From Mile 2 to Badagry, transportation costs have risen to N2,500, up from N1,500. Similarly, traveling from Amukoko to Mile 2 now costs N1,500, compared to the previous N500.

Another Lagos commuter from the Abule Egba axis, Mr. Kola Bolaji, shared his concerns, saying: “Going from Abule Egba to Oshodi used to cost N400–N500 but now costs N700 and most times far more. On high-demand days, like Mondays and Friday nights, the fare could soar to N1000.

“Everybody is saying the same thing, the country is hard. Some people support the reform agenda, but others ask: ‘How long must we suffer before we see the benefits?’”

Significant lifestyle changes

Meanwhile, for Lagosians like Bola, who works on Lagos Island but lives in Ikorodu, transportation costs have forced significant lifestyle changes.

She said: “Many workers now opt to stay on the Island during the week to save on commuting costs. This creates a rush on Mondays when they leave for work and Fridays when they return home.”

Even ferry services, once a cost-effective alternative, have become exorbitant.

According to her, “The fare from Ikorodu to the Island has risen from N500 to N3,000 per trip. Coupled with ancillary costs like bike fares to jetties, commuting expenses can reach N6,000 daily.

“For example, I live around the Igbogbo area of Ikorodu. I have to spend N500 just to get to the jetty. It’s not funny.”

The transportation crisis in Lagos has broader implications affecting not just commuters but also the courier, logistics, and transport industries that rely on an efficient system.

Stakeholders and many commuters are calling for urgent government intervention to stabilise fares, expand affordable transport options and invest in sustainable infrastructure such as more BRT buses.

Police arrests international fraudsters that specialize in forging foreign certificates in Lagos

..offer N66million as bribe to Police

By Ebinum Samuel

Two suspected international fraudsters that specialize in forging certificates of different international and African Universities have been arrested by the police at Zone 2, Onikan, Lagos. The suspects, Elvis Osakpolo Edokpain, 23, and Kelly Osas Endgieen, 24, also specialize in defrauding their unsuspecting victims on the internet and have succeeded in acquiring exotic cars and erecting mansions in different parts of the country with the proceeds of their loot.
Police sources at Zone 2 said table turned for the suspects after detectives at the Anti-Corruption Unit of the Zone received credible information from outside Nigerians concerning some group of boys that specializes in forging foreign certificates. It was learned that on getting the information, the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Zone, Adegoke Fayoude detailed anti-corruption unit to investigate it. He reportedly gave matching orders that they must be rounded up without delay.

Based on his stern directives, according to police sources, detectives stormed Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos and as soon as the suspects arrived, they trailed them to a five star hotel at Osapa-London in Lekki and later accosted them at the bus stop while they were about escaping secretly from the hotel.
It was gathered that on searching their luggage, one certificate of Blue Crest College, Ghana, belonging to Elvis Osakpolo Edokpiain, was recovered and a student identity card of Academic City College was also recovered from Kenny Osas. Further search revealed a transcript of an academic record from Blue Crest University belonging to Elvis Osapolo. Going through the search again, detectives discovered a letter of English proficiency from the said college and a letter of recommendation from the same Blue Crest College.

Reports said that upon interrogation, the suspects made useful statements to the police and confessed that they never got any admission into the school, that they procured the degree certificate through the help of a female Nigerian resident in Ghana. The suspects further stated that the major aim of doing that is to enable them get Ghana resident permit, which they got and the resident permit is showing them also as a student of Academic City University and that none of them has ever been admitted in the school.
Police sources further disclosed that the suspects confessed that they were made to pay 15,000 Ghana cedis for the certificate and 5,000 Ghana cedis which is equivalent to N1.5 million and 5,000 Ghana cedis for the resident permit which is equivalent to 500,000 dollars. They reportedly paid a total of 26,000 Ghana cedis to procure the documents. On further interrogation, they said that they are doing it to evade arrest in Ghana since they don’t have any means of livelihood.
According to the suspects in their confessional statements, whenever police intercept us, we will show the passport that we are students because we don’t have any means of livelihood in Ghana.

On further interrogation, they confessed that they do fraudulent activities, such as online romance scam and the provision of foreign bank accounts for fraudulent transactions on internet through what they call ‘ Facebook bombing’. The suspects said; “we meet people online and present ourselves as an American soldier by name Captain Donald Rowe, whom we are impersonating on Instagram. He is a captain of the United States of America and currently on peacekeeping mission in Syria. While we are engaging our victims, we will tell them that there are goods in Syria that if they are interested to buy, they should pay money and we will send the goods to you. We will show them pictures of good materials in Syria.
The suspects also said,” After they make the payment, we use our block chain wallets to collect the money or foreign bank accounts which at last are being credited in our Nigerian accounts. We have our partners in UK, South Africa, and other countries and most of our victims are from Japan, Denmark, China, and other countries.”
Vanguard learned that while detectives were making frantic efforts to get more credible information from the arrested suspects, a mild drama ensured when the two suspects started negotiating to bribe the police for them to be set free.

Police sources said at that stage, the Assistant Inspector General of Police, Adegoke Fayoude who recently exposed another suspected fraudsters for offering his men a whooping sum of N174m as bribe was contacted and he directed his men to play along and recover the money as an exhibit. Subsequently, the detectives played along and the suspects paid them a sum of N66m, which they collected and kept as an exhibit.
Police sources said that already, police authorities have written to Ghana embassy to get more information about the result and their suspected partners in Ghana said to be spearheading the fraud while they have also spread their dragnets through the International Police, Interpol, to round up their foreign accomplices.

The suspects who claimed they were only able to attend secondary schools in Benin City lamented the fate that befell them stating that it was poverty and the need to make ends meet that drove them into fraud They advised youths in the country to work hard in order to achieve success and stop looking for the easy way out.

NDLEA intercepts N3.3billion Meth, Loud Christmas shipments in auto parts from Canada

Arrests 3 businessmen linked to consignments in Lagos; recovers N4.4billion worth opioids in Rivers

By Ebinum Samuel

Multi-billion-naira worth of shipments of Methamphetamine and Loud, a strong synthetic strain of cannabis meant for distribution during the Christmas and New Year festive season, concealed in automobile spare parts imported from Canada, have been intercepted by operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, at the Tincan seaport in Lagos after months of intelligence-driven tracking of the cargoes across three continents.
For the first time in the history of NDLEA’s anti-narcotic operations, two consignments of methamphetamine weighing 83.301 kilograms were on Thursday 12th and Friday 13th December 2024, recovered from separate containers bearing vehicles and spare parts coming from Canada and heading to warehouses in the Ladipo automobile parts market in Mushin area of Lagos.
While one of the containers going to Ladipo market through the Sifax bonded terminal was examined on Thursday 12th December, not less than 5.001kg methamphetamine hidden in a bag wrapped in bed sheet that came in a Toyota Camry car, was recovered, even as a businessman, Isaac Onwumere linked with the consignment was promptly arrested.

The other container bearing automobile spare parts checked on Friday 13th December was found to contain 1, 735 parcels of Loud packed in 44 jumbo bags with a total weight of 867.5kg and six plastic coolers containing 87 packs of methamphetamine weighing 78.3kg. At least, two businessmen: Nwanolue Emeka and Friday Ogbe have been arrested in connection with the seizure.
The two meth consignments have a combined weight of 83.301kg worth One Hundred and Twenty-Four Million Nine Hundred and Fifty-One Thousand Naira (124,951,000.00) while the 867.5kg Loud is worth Two Billion One Hundred and Sixty-Eight Million Seven Hundred and Fifty Thousand Naira (N2,168,750,000.00) in street value.
