Retired Deputy Inspector-General of Police Abiodun Sylvester Alabi Grieves the Passing of His Paramount Ruler

The Okanlomo of Ilawe-Ekiti and revered Deputy Inspector General of Police, Abiodun Sylvester Alabi fdc (Rtd), has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi Afuntade I, describing the late monarch’s transition as a painful loss to the people of Ilawe-Ekiti, Ekiti State, and the traditional institution in Nigeria.
Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi Afuntade I, the Alawe of Ilawe-Ekiti, reportedly joined his ancestors on Thursday, 21st of May , 2026 bringing to a close a reign remembered for its commitment to preserving culture, strengthening communal bonds, and advancing the development of the ancient town.
In a heartfelt tribute, DIG Abiodun Sylvester Alabi, who also holds the traditional title of Okanlomo of Ilawe-Ekiti, said the news of the monarch’s passing came as a profound shock and sadness to sons and daughters of the kingdom at home and in the diaspora.
According to him, the late Alawe embodied the virtues of wisdom, dignity, peace, and responsible leadership throughout his reign, earning the admiration and respect of his subjects and all who encountered him.
He noted that beyond occupying the royal stool, the monarch served as a symbol of unity and continuity, dedicating himself to protecting the traditions and values that define Ilawe-Ekiti while also embracing progress and development.
DIG Alabi stated that the passing of Oba Afuntade I marks the end of a significant chapter in the history of Ilawe-Ekiti, adding that the monarch’s contributions to community growth and cultural preservation will remain indelible.
He further remarked that the late royal father’s reign reflected the enduring strength of Ekiti heritage and demonstrated the important role traditional rulers continue to play in fostering peace, identity, and social cohesion.
“Today, Ilawe-Ekiti mourns a father, a custodian of tradition, and a royal icon whose impact will continue to resonate for generations,” he said.
The police chief and traditional title holder offered prayers for the peaceful repose of the monarch’s soul and urged members of the community to remain united and uphold the values the late king represented.
He encouraged the people of Ilawe-Ekiti to honour the memory of their departed monarch by sustaining the spirit of togetherness and communal advancement that defined his reign.
As tributes continue to pour in from different quarters, the passing of Oba Adebanji Ajibade Alabi Afuntade I has been widely described as the end of an era and a solemn moment of reflection for the people of Ilawe-Ekiti and the broader Ekiti cultural community.
