Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala’s younger brother dies

 

 

 

The Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom in Delta State has announced the death of Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo, the younger brother of the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Prince Okonjo, a member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family, reportedly passed away on May 30, 2026.

The announcement was made by the Palace Secretary, Prince Ifeakanachukwu Emordi, in a statement issued on behalf of the royal household.

Reacting to the loss, the Obi of Ogwashi-Uku, His Royal Majesty, Ifechukwude Aninshi Okonjo II, described the deceased as a devoted family man whose passing has left a significant vacuum within both the royal family and the kingdom.

The monarch said Prince Ikechukwu Okonjo was “a proud and irreplaceable member of the Umu Obi Obahai Royal Family, whose roots run deep in the history, dignity and tradition of Ogwashi-Uku Kingdom.”

 

He further noted that the late prince would be remembered for his humility, grace and unwavering commitment to his family and community.

 

According to the monarch, the impact of Prince Okonjo’s life would continue to resonate among those who knew him and benefited from his contributions.

 

He added that the deceased is survived by his wife, daughter, brothers, sisters and other relatives.

 

The royal father also conveyed the palace’s condolences to the bereaved family and urged sons and daughters of the kingdom, both at home and abroad, to remember the family in their prayers and offer support during the mourning period.
