Oba of Benin summons native doctors, traditional priests as Edo battles kidnapping, cult violence

The Oba of Benin, Omo N’Oba N’Edo, Uku Akpolokpolo, Ewuare II, has called an emergency meeting of native doctors, traditional priests and priestesses as concerns grow over the security situation in Edo State and across the country.

The directive was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by Chief Victor Nosakhare on behalf of the Secretary of the Benin Traditional Council, Frank Irabor.

According to the statement, the meeting is scheduled to take place at the Oba’s Palace at 12 noon on Tuesday, June 23, 2026.

The palace stated that the gathering was convened on the instruction and authority of Oba Ewuare II and should be accorded the highest level of priority.

The statement explained that the meeting is intended to examine how traditional institutions and practices can support ongoing government efforts to address insecurity.

In a separate development, the Benin Traditional Council is also expected to meet with youth leaders, popularly known as Okaighele, at the palace on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, at the same time.

The move underscores the increasing role of the Benin Palace and other traditional institutions in supporting security initiatives as Edo continues to grapple with incidents of kidnapping and cult-related violence.
