  • Meet AskProf, the AI Tutor Helping Students Learn Instead of Memorise

    By Ebinum Samuel

    Professor Adedeji Badiru

As artificial intelligence rapidly changes classrooms across the world, renowned educator Professor Adedeji Badiru is urging students to move beyond the culture of copying AI-generated answers and embrace technology that genuinely improves learning. His answer to the growing challenge is AskProf, an AI-powered educational platform built to help students understand concepts, strengthen critical thinking and retain knowledge rather than simply generating instant responses.

With more than four decades of teaching experience, Badiru said AskProf was developed around a simple educational philosophy: AI should be a learning companion, not a substitute for independent thinking.”Students shouldn’t rely on artificial intelligence merely to get answers,” he said. “They should use it to become smarter.”Unlike general-purpose AI chatbots, AskProf is purpose-built for education. It supports students preparing for examinations including JAMB, WAEC, NECO, Post-UTME, SAT, ACT and AP, while providing interactive learning tools such as flashcards, quizzes, study summaries and personalised progress tracking.

The platform analyses each learner’s strengths and weaknesses, enabling students to spend more time mastering difficult topics instead of repeatedly memorising answers. For teachers and lecturers, AskProf offers digital classroom tools that allow educators to create virtual classes, monitor students’ learning progress and identify subjects requiring additional attention.Badiru revealed that the idea behind AskProf was conceived more than 20 years ago when he registered the AskProf.com domain with the intention of answering students’ academic questions online. The concept became fully achievable only after advances in artificial intelligence made personalised learning at scale possible. He said the emergence of modern generative AI inspired him to finally bring the project to life, while collaboration with AI developer Damilola Adelaja accelerated its development.Although enthusiastic about AI’s educational potential, Badiru cautioned against treating AI-generated responses as infallible. AskProf includes built-in reminders encouraging students to verify information independently and allows users to rate responses to improve accuracy.”Don’t just use AI to get answers,” he said. “Use it to become smarter.”Badiru also explained why the platform is available free of charge.

According to him, quality education should not be determined by a student’s financial circumstances.”My learning philosophy is that we all learn better when we all have equal access,” he said. “Making AskProf free helps level the educational playing field.”Designed to function efficiently on modest smartphones and low-data connections, AskProf was built with Nigerian students in mind while maintaining global relevance. The platform already attracts users from both Nigeria and the United States, with educators increasingly recommending it as a supplementary learning tool.

Looking ahead, Badiru disclosed that dedicated mobile applications and institutional partnerships are already in development as AskProf expands its reach across schools and universities.Rather than competing with teachers, he said, AskProf seeks to extend the impact of great teaching beyond the classroom by making personalised academic support available anytime and anywhere.”Our mission is to prove that AI can inspire learning instead of replacing it,” Badiru said. “When technology teaches students how to think, not just what to answer, everyone wins.”

Hackers hit Zenith Bank, steal customers’ information

Hackers have hit the database of Zenith Bank, one of Nigeria’s largest financial institutions, stealing customers’ information.

Zenith confirmed the attack in an email to customers on Tuesday.

The bank said the hackers accessed limited customer information, “including email addresses and phone numbers, during a cyberattack that forms part of a broader global attack on organisations across different sectors”.

The lender stressed that the incident involved only limited customer information, adding that its banking services and digital channels remain secure and fully operational.

The bank said it is investigating the attack, noting that its incident response protocols and other cybersecurity measures were immediately activated after the breach was discovered.

“As a precaution, we encourage our customers to remain vigilant against phishing emails, text messages, or phone calls, and to never disclose their password, PIN, One-Time Password (OTP), or other security credentials to anyone,” the bank said.

Zenith Bank said it remains committed to protecting customers’ information and thanked them for their continued trust, adding that investigations into the incident are ongoing.

In August 2024, Guaranty Trust Bank (GTB) reported experiencing a similar incident.

The commercial bank said there were attempts to compromise its website domain, but customers’ data was not affected.

The latest attack comes months after the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) warned the public of cyber hack attempts to gain access to personal accounts of Nigerians.

The CBN said the hackers were circulating fraudulent messages and emails falsely claiming to originate from the bank.

According to the financial regulator, there were misleading messages circulating, designed to deceive Nigerians and compromise their personal information.

The regulator said the fake communications, which include emails and online messages, often prompt recipients to click suspicious links while spreading false claims about the bank’s leadership, licensing activities, and policy decisions.

  • Biafra Civil War: Igbos were compensated — Yakubu Gowon defends Obafemi Awolowo

Biafra Civil War: Igbos were compensated — Yakubu Gowon defends Obafemi Awolowo

Former Military Head of State, Yakubu Gowon, has stated that the Igbos were compensated for their losses after the Biafra civil war.

Gowon said that Igbos who had money in banks were compensated with interest after the civil war. The Biafra civil war began on July 6, 1967, and ended on January 15, 1970. During this time, Gowon was the Head of State, while the late sage, Obafemi Awolowo, served as the Federal Finance Commissioner.

However, Gowon dismissed the unfair blame placed on Awolowo by those who accused him of giving them 20 pounds, even though they had millions of pounds in the bank before the civil war.

The former Head of State stated this in his memoir, ‘My Life of Duty and Allegiance,’ where he said that the policy on controlling money after the war was the last decision made by the Federal Government.

“The Central Bank created a panel to examine all the effects of converting the Biafran pound into another currency, but it was clear this would be a tough task because from the start, the Biafran currency wasn’t officially recognized as legal tender in Nigeria.

    Nigerian State Politics

“Because there were so many Biafran pounds in use, the Federal Government realized it couldn’t exchange all of them at the same value as the Nigerian currency without causing the economy to fail.

“Economic specialists suggested that the Federal Government should set the payment to around 20 Nigerian pounds for every adult from Biafra, no matter how much Biafran money they bring back.

“We agreed to the proposal and made it our official policy, especially because we couldn’t figure out the small and large details needed to print the Biafran currency.

“However, everyone who left Nigeria but had proof that they had money in Nigerian banks got the full amount of their money plus the interest it earned, all in Nigerian currency. It would have been a bad idea to choose a different path,” Gowon said.

Police recall retired AIG Igwe, Owohunwa, 473 others, order mandatory 6-month induction

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered the reinstatement of 475 officers who were previously retired over the controversial “merger of service” policy, directing them to report for a compulsory six-month induction programme at the Police Staff College, Jos, following a court ruling that nullified their retirement.

According to a report by Sahara Reporters, the directive was conveyed in a confidential letter dated July 31, 2026, signed by the Force Secretary, Assistant Inspector-General of Police Bode Akinbamilowo, on behalf of the Inspector-General of Police. The communication was addressed to Assistant Inspectors-General across the 17 police zones, Commissioners of Police in all states and the Commandant of the Police Staff College, Jos.

According to the letter, the Police Service Commission (PSC), at its plenary meeting held on June 25, 2026, approved the regularisation of the affected officers’ dates of first appointment after the National Industrial Court reversed their compulsory retirement.

The officers had initially been retired following a PSC decision reached during its First Extraordinary Meeting of January 31, 2025, on the merger of service. However, the decision was overturned in compliance with the judgment delivered in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/28/2025.

The Force Secretary instructed all zonal commands and state police commissioners to ensure that the affected officers are contacted and directed to report to the Police Staff College for the mandatory training programme.

He further instructed them to “locate and warn” the officers to report for the induction course.

Those affected span several recruitment and promotion courses conducted between 1992 and 2012 and include officers from the rank of Superintendent of Police (SP) up to Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG). Among the senior officers listed are AIG Idowu Owohunwa, AIG Benneth Chinedu Igwe, AIG Uche Ifeanyi Henry and Deputy Commissioner of Police Simon Asamber Lough.

The induction programme has been scheduled in two phases. Documentation and arrival will take place between August 1 and August 16, 2026, while the six-month training will run from August 17, 2026, to February 16, 2027.

The Inspector-General also directed the Commandant of the Police Staff College to submit the list of all documented participants on or before August 24, 2026, stressing that “lateness will not be tolerated.”

Copies of the directive were circulated to the IGP’s Secretariat and the Deputy Inspectors-General overseeing Finance and Administration, Operations, Logistics and Supply, Investigation, Training and Development, Research and Planning, Information and Communication Technology, Intelligence, as well as the Assistant Inspector-General in charge of Police Accounts and Budget to ensure the smooth implementation of the induction exercise.

The list also includes several other senior officers across different cadres, with official records indicating their ages, dates of appointment and revised retirement timelines following the court-ordered reinstatement.

PHOTOS: Makinde, Fayemi, Oyinlola visit Obasanjo in Abeokuta, discuss 2027 elections

Seyi Makinde, governor of Oyo; Kayode Fayemi, former governor of Ekiti; and Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governor of Osun, have visited former President Olusegun Obasanjo amid political permutations ahead of the 2027 general election.

In a terse Facebook post, Makinde said the trio visited the former president at his residence in Abeokuta, the Ogun state capital, on Sunday.

According to him, the meeting focused on a range of national issues ahead of the next general election.

“Earlier today, we visited Baba, His Excellency Chief Olusegun Obasanjo GCFR in Abeokuta,” Makinde wrote.

“Our discussions centred on important national issues in view of the upcoming general election. We appreciate Baba for his wise counsel at this crucial time in our nation’s history.”

In May, Makinde, who is on the verge of completing his second term as Oyo governor, formally declared his intention to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Speaking at the joint mega rally of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) in Ibadan, the Oyo governor said, “the time to reset Nigeria is now”.

He said the country’s situation had “continued to deteriorate, putting the majority of Nigerians on survival mode on a daily basis”, adding that government officials responsible for citizens’ welfare had abdicated their responsibilities.

Makinde, who is the APM presidential candidate, is expected to contest the election alongside former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC); Peter Obi, flagbearer of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC); and President Bola Tinubu, who is seeking re-election for a second term.

Although Oyinlola is a chieftain of the PDP while Fayemi remains a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), there are speculations that the meeting with Obasanjo may be connected with Makinde’s 2027 presidential bid.

Obasanjo is yet to publicly declare who he will support in the 2027 election, although the former president is widely believed to be backing Obi’s presidential ambition.

The former president has been in the spotlight in recent days after alleging that Atiku gave the late Ghali Umar Na’Abba, former speaker of the house of representatives, N5 million to begin impeachment proceedings against him during his first term in office.

Reacting, Atiku accused the ex-president of fabricating allegations against him to favour his kinsman ahead of the 2027 elections.
