E-Transmission: Ubani Warns Senate Proposal Could Cause Electoral Errors

Monday Ubani, SAN, the chairman of the Nigeria Bar Association’s (NBA) Electoral Reform Committee, claims that there is potential for error in the Senate’s proposed Electoral Reform Amendment Bill.

While answering questions during an interview on Arise Television on Saturday, Ubani made this claim.

Emphasizing that nothing has changed, he stated that manual collation occurs in collation centers for both electronic transmission and transfer.

He asserts that IREV does not compute or tabulate results; it is only for seeing outcomes.

The lawyer went on to say that the majority of Nigerians feel that the Senate’s version leaves leeway for communications failures that might be used illegally.

“Electoral error is allowed in the Senate’s proposed law. A harmonization committee will examine any discrepancies and create a unified version before sending it to the president for approval.

And I’m thrilled that the House of Representatives completed theirs last year. The Senate then passed their own version as well, but there are some discrepancies. The committee will meet on Monday to reconcile those positions.

The 2022 Act’s stance was that it assigned INEC the duty of establishing or prescribing guidelines on the method of transfer.

The polling station and the collation center have always been at odds in our political system.

According to him, “the people have seen a situation where a different result will be declared at the collation center, different from what happened at the polling unit.”
