Plateau: Gunmen kill scores, several wounded in Jos North community

 

 

The Plateau State Government has imposed a 48-hour curfew following the eruption of killings in the volatile Jos North Local Government Area of the state.

Gunmen invaded the sleepy Gari Ya Waye community of Angwan Rukuba area, killing many people and wounding several others.

Our correspondent gathered that the gunmen, riding on motorcycles, attacked the community at about 7.30 pm on Sunday, shooting sporadically.

They were said to have escaped on their motorcycles after the mayhem.

A viral video which surfaced online showed many dead bodies littered on the ground, with blood flowing like streams of water.

Some residents were heard berating security agencies for their non-response to the incident.

A voice said that more than an hour after the killers left, no security personnel were around.

At the time of writing this report, the number of people killed had not been ascertained.

However, the media officer of Operation Enduring Peace, Capt. Chinedu Oteh, said that operatives had been dispatched to the area while normalcy had been restored.

He said a response squad was sent to the area as soon as the report was received.

The Plateau State Government has put a 48-hour curfew on all of Jos North Local Government Area in response to what happened.

A statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Joyce Lohya Ramnap, said the curfew took effect from midnight on Sunday.

The statement said, “Following the incident that occurred at Gari Ya Waye community Angwan Rukuba, today, Sunday, 29th March, 2026, resulting in the loss of lives, while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries, the Plateau State Government in conjunction with security agencies wishes to inform the general public of the imposition of a 48-hour curfew within Jos North Local government Area with immediate effect, commencing from 12 midnight of 29th March to 1st April, 2026.

“The government, under the leadership of His Excellency Governor Caleb Mutfwang, strongly condemns this barbaric and unprovoked attack on innocent citizens and assures the public that all necessary measures are being taken to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice.

“Citizens are urged to remain calm, stay vigilant, and cooperate fully with security agencies by providing any useful information that may aid ongoing investigations.”
