Four decades after unidentified individuals brutally murdered foremost investigative Journalist, Dele Giwa, a crime reporter, Folorunsho Atta, disclosed that Giwa had strongly complained to Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, the nationwide harassment, intimidation and coercion of citizens by security agents three days to the day Babangida overthrew Buhari.
According to Atta, the two men were part of a group of four friends who visited his boss, the personal Doctor to late Chief M. K. O. Abiola. The other two visitors were Dr. Beko Ransome-Kuti and Oba Funsho Adeolu.
“As part of my normal routine, I was responsible for looking after my boss’s guests, especially since three of them happened to be close, older friends of mine. While guiding them to the whereabouts of my boss, a pair of sharp, high-quality shoes worn by Babangida caught my eye. I couldn’t help but compliment him on them. This, Giwa turned to me and asked what kind of shoes they were. When I replied that they were made of pure leather, both Giwa and Beko immidiately started teasing me and poking fun at my answer”.
Atta said the fact that Babaginda took over power three days after Giwa’s criticized the previous government’s harassment of citizens does not mean the coup was executed on Giwa’s behalf. The timing, he said it was simply a coincidence, and does not imply that Babangida turned against his former boss for that reason.
