Ever since the appointment of Brigadier-General Buba Marwa (rtd)
as the Chairman/CEO of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) by former President Muhammadu Buhari.on January 15, 2021, and his official assumption of office on January 18, 2021,
several landmark achievements have been recorded in the agency’s anti-narcotics campaign. These are characterized by record-breaking drug destructions, multi-billion naira cartel takedowns, and massive synthetic drug laboratory busts.
For the NDLEA to have won Gold at the 2026 Africa SABRE Awards and for President Ahmed Tinubu to have commended it on the remarkable success achieved against transborder drug network
it has therefore, become compelling to highlight these achievements.And more so, to assess the strategies adapted for other agencies, Ministeries and organizations to take a cue from. This is needed at this period as enlightened Nigerians keep looking for credible leaders to make the desired difference in whatever assignment they are given and all it takes to enthrone good governance in Nigeria.
In its distilled essence, the success story of
NDLEA under Marwa, particularly its dramatic transformation into Africa’s leading anti-narcotics organization, which has elicited global acclaim
is driven by a cocktail of significance factors. These include
strategic blend of strong leadership, institutional reforms, data-driven supply suppression, and aggressive public advocacy.
It would be recalled that the NDLEA was once plagued by operational stagnation and low staff morale, but with the visionary, determined, passionate patriot such as Marwa at the head he propelled the agency under a holistic transformation that has turned it into a highly efficient agency to be reconked with. Before delving into these, let us beam a bright light into its recent feats.
For instance, within just the first three months of 2026, the NDLEA successfully prosecuted and secured 974 drug convictions. This included 11 high-profile drug kingpins who collectively received 254 years in prison sentences
Furthermore, in May and June 2026, the NDLEA smashed highly fortified, industrial-scale methamphetamine laboratories operating deep within forests in Oyo (Tapa village) and Ogun (Ijebu East) states. The operations led to the arrest of foreign technical experts (including a Mexican national) and local kingpins, as well as the recovery of over $360 million worth of synthetic drugs and chemicals. Highly commendable, is it not? Of course, it is. But there was more to come.
In mid-2026, Chairman Buba Marwa revealed that the agency’s strategic shift has led to 77,792 suspect arrests, over 14,000 convictions, and the total disruption of 128 regional drug barons over a five-year tracking window.
And in August 2026, the NDLEA publicly destroyed 329,865 kilograms (over 300 tons) of seized illicit drugs in Lagos state. The incinerated cache consisted of cocaine, heroin, methamphetamine, and opioids, heavily disrupting the financial supply chains of several cartels
Also, in August 2026, the United States International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Bureau (INL) officially commended the NDLEA’s “phenomenal” successes and donated advanced spectroscopy equipment to enhance Nigeria’s forensic capabilities in mapping synthetic illicit substances
Not done, in September 2026, NDLEA operatives arrested one Dunu Bethel Ebubechukwu. He was a previously convicted drug trafficker who had changed his name and established a front as a herbal tea businessman to coordinate cocaine shipments to Saudi Arabia. There are crooks and there are crook-crackers, one might say.
Added to its in-depth engagement into the secret operations of drug cartels the agency intercepted ₦6.2 billion worth of “Jihadi drugs” hidden in Ghana soap and seized ₦7.1 billion worth of Canadian Loud (a synthetic cannabis strain) concealed inside vehicles at the Apapa seaport. It also intercepted a modified 20,000-litre fuel tanker outfitted with a specialized secret compartment used to traffic 2,145kg of cannabis and over 2 million opioid pills.
With the National Drug Control Master Plan (NDCMP 2026-2030), the agency finalized the framework for its new five-year master plan to aggressively focus on drug demand reduction and community rehabilitation nationwide.
All said, the success story of Nigeria’s
NDLEA, especially its impactful transformation into Africa’s leading anti-narcotics organization is predicted on the strong pillars of visionary leadership, institutional reforms, data-driven supply suppression, and aggressive public advocacy. The NDLEA that was once plagued by operational stagnation and low staff morale, has been transformed into a global brand with exemplary effectiveness.
On the issue of financial intelligence, the agency began targeting the financial lifelines of drug networks, freezing assets and pursuing money laundering investigations to permanently cripple cartels. That is, rather than just seizing physical products.
With regards to WADA , instead of focusing mainly on arrests, it achieved immense success by balancing supply reduction with demand reduction through it.
Also, by decentralizing its campaigns with the formation of partnerships with local governments, traditional rulers and schools the grassroots advocacy has done well.
On a global scale, its regular collaboration with international bodies such as the US-DEA, US-INL, the EU and the UNODC it has largely improved the tracking capabilities.
Cumulatively, with the elite Task Forces, financial intelligence, balanced approach through the War Against Drug Abuse, grassroots advocacy and destigmatized rehabilitation for the addicts the NDLEA is the federal government agency for all others to learn from.It takes vision, character, commitment, consistency, passion and pragmatic partnerships to make the desired difference as Marwa has done.
