Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate Peter Obi has declared that he is prepared to abandon his ambition to hold public office if a thorough review of his records shows that he is not fit to serve the country.
The former Labour Party presidential candidate made the remarks during an interview with Chude, where he emphasized the importance of transparency, accountability, and thorough scrutiny of political aspirants before they are elected.
Obi said he has no objection to Nigerians examining his background, public records, and past actions if doing so would help voters make informed decisions about those seeking elective positions.
According to the former Anambra State governor, every politician should undergo proper public scrutiny before elections rather than after assuming office.
He argued that Nigerians have, on several occasions, uncovered disturbing information about elected officials only after they had taken power, a situation he believes can be prevented through comprehensive vetting before elections.
Obi stressed that he is willing to accept the outcome of any fair and transparent assessment of his record.
He maintained that if such an investigation establishes that he is not qualified to lead Nigeria, he would voluntarily withdraw his ambition instead of continuing to seek office.
“Let’s examine everything now. If I’m not qualified to serve this country, I will simply withdraw. I have nothing to hide and would rather withdraw from the race than continue if evidence showed I was unfit to lead. Public officials should be subjected to scrutiny before they are entrusted with leadership responsibilities,” Obi said.
The former governor reiterated that openness and accountability are essential qualities for anyone seeking public office, adding that voters deserve to know the character, competence, and track record of candidates before casting their ballots. He maintained that greater transparency in the electoral process would strengthen democracy and help build public confidence in Nigeria’s leadership.
