The Chairman of the Police Service Commission, DIG Hashimu Salihu Argungu (rtd), mni, psc, NPM, has reaffirmed the Commission’s resolve to intensify the fight against human rights abuses in policing and ensure responsible, professional policing in Nigeria.
He made this known today as the Commission, in collaboration with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), commenced a 3-day training on International Human Rights-Based Policing and Effective Oversight for its personnel.
Mr Torty Njoku Kalu, the spokesman of the Commission, said the training which started yesterday in Abuja will end on Thursday, 15th October 2026. He disclosed that it has drawn 100 participants from the PSC workforce.

According to the ICRC Police and Security Adviser, Mr. Chuks Ngbeken, the training is of great significance, as it is aimed at equipping PSC officials with critical knowledge on the protection of human rights in line with international standards, enabling them to effectively oversight the Nigeria Police Force. It will provide valuable insights into the legal frameworks and best practices for promoting human dignity during police operations, particularly in conflict and humanitarian situations, he added.
In his remarks, DIG Argungu (rtd) acknowledged the support of the ICRC and commended its recognition of the Commission’s efforts at ensuring accountability and discipline in the NPF through policies aimed at more professional policing. He enjoined participants to imbibe the culture of reading and seeking knowledge of relevant statutes and authorities that will equip them to effectively carry out their oversight functions.
He vowed that under his leadership, the Commission will not tolerate human rights abuses and will continue to carry out its oversight mandate for greater efficiency and effectiveness in the Nigeria Police Force.
